IN THE EVENT OF AN EARTHQUAKE.
- Remain calm
- If you are inside get under a sturdy object, such as a desk or table. Keep clear of windows. Avoid being in front of file cabinets or bookcases unless you are under a desk. Remain there until it appears safe to leave.
- If you are outside get into the open, away from trees, power lines, and buildings. Be particulary careful to stay away from buildings to avoid falling glass or other debris.
- Do not use elevators until NASA Ames Center Plant Engineering has determined they are safe.
- Use telephones only for essential calls since the entire area network can be blocked if too many people try to call at once. Unnecessary telephone usage may slow or prevent emergency calls from being completed.
- Report any facility-related damage to Moffett Dispatch - 911.
- When the initial quake has ended there is still the danger of aftershocks. Aftershocks can be almost as strong as the initial temor or so weak they can hardly be felt. Exercise your best judgment. don't assume the danger has passed.
- If the earthquake results in substanial damage, extreme emergency conditions will prevail. This means that phones may not work, power may be out, gas leaks may occur, roads and bridges may be impassable, and normal city services may not be available for up to 72 hours.
- For emergency use, your work area/facility will have first aid packs, flashlights, etc. Moffett Dispatch will coordinate the distribution of other provisions as required per the Disaster preparedness Plan.
- Leadership may not be available depending on the time of day. Please use your best judgment in the absence of on the spot guidance/instruction.
